GET TO KNOW THE OLDEST FOOTBALL PROFESSIONAL PLAYER IN THE WORLD

12:42

Before you ask, it’s not Mark Schwarzer.
Kazuyoshi Miura plays for Yokohama FC in the second division of Japanese football.
He is currently 48-years-old.
That’s right, he’s not even a goalkeeper, he’s an actual player, a forward in fact.
Miura travelled to Brazil at the age of 15 to pursue a career as a footballer and made his professional debut for Santos in 1986.
That’s a whole 12 years before West Ham’s Reece Oxford, the only man to contain Mesut Ozil this season, was even born.

Miura, known as Kazu, was the first Japanese player to be named the Asian Player of the Year in 1993 – the same year Japan’s J-League launched.
Kazu last played for Japan in 2000 after racking up an impressive 55 goals in just 89 appearances.
This morning at 11:11am, in honour of Miura’s iconic number, Yokohama announced that they would be extending Miura’s contract for another year.
This means that Miura will still be playing professional football, outfield remember, at the age of 49.
If you’re going to go that far you might as get to 50. Then dig in for a century.
